Background & process

Each year, a yearbook is released for all the students and teachers at Södra Vätterbygdens Folkhögskola—a long-standing tradition. The first-year students in the Graphic Design and Communication program are responsible for designing the yearbook. While there are certain elements that has to be included to maintain a consistent theme, the students have the freedom to choose the design. The project begins during fall semester and is being sent to print in early May. At the end-of-year ceremony, everyone receives a copy of the book. Our team each created a mood board featuring images, typography, illustrations, and color choices. After that we pitched our ideas within the group, and then voted on the best concept.

We divided responsibilities to streamline the process. I was the project leader alongside David. My tasks included scheduling all classes and booking our photo studio for the photo sessions, ensuring we met deadlines and stayed within budget. I also helped photographing all the students at the school. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we couldn’t shoot any group photos, so we opted for individual portraits.

Reflections

We were very pleased with the outcome. Despite not being able to shoot any class photos like our initial plan, the individual portraits turned out beautifully.

The school principal mentioned that it was the most attractive yearbook he had seen since starting his position in 2016. We considered that a high praise. We had excellent collaboration within the team, making it a fun project to do.
